🚩 When “Healing” Is Actually a Hook: My Message to Our Community
I need to share something that has been weighing heavy on my heart this week.
In the digital age, it is easier than ever to find a healer online. But as the community grows, so does the presence of "practitioners" who prioritize profit over professionalism. Recently, a local Burlington resident reached out to me after a "free long-distance analysis" left her feeling anxious, "broken," and in harm's way.
I received many of these messages during COVID when Ontario was under shutdown, but as we head into 2026, I am seeing an uptick in these predatory tactics once again. I felt it was vital to write about this experience not just for my own release, but because I truly do not want anyone else to be taken advantage of or put in psychological harm's way.
When I read the document they were sent, I recognized it immediately: a fear-based sales pitch disguised as a spiritual reading.
The Anatomy of a Spiritual "Hook"
The reading our resident received used a "shotgun approach" to ensure she felt completely unprotected. The scammer claimed she had:
-
Dark entities and curses "from the heart" of others.
-
"Very Bad" aura colors (Cloudy Brown/Black) and "Energy Leaks."
-
Blockages in every area of life: Love, Success, Health, and Friendships.
-
Damaged protection: Claiming she had "no strong protection" left.
The Strategy: By telling someone they are surrounded by darkness, the scammer creates a "spiritual emergency." They then position themselves as the only person who can provide the "Quantum Leap" needed to save them. And, often for a high price.
How to Vet a "Free" Offering: Gift or Trap?
Many honest, well-vetted practitioners offer complimentary discovery calls to build rapport. However, you must know how to tell a generous introduction from a predatory hook.
How to Vet a Practitioner (Even if they aren’t in an Association)
While many excellent, high-integrity practitioners work independently outside of formal organizations, membership in a body like the Canadian Reiki Association (CRA) offers an added layer of peace of mind for those new to energy work, as it ensures the practitioner has undergone a third-party verification of their training and ethics. While membership in CRA, provides an immediate "seal of approval" and ethical oversight, many talented, heart-centered practitioners choose to work independently.
If they aren't a member of an association, look for these "Trust Pillars":
-
Transparent History: An honest practitioner is happy to share where they studied, who their teachers were (lineage), and how many years they’ve been practicing.
-
Referrals & Reviews: Look for testimonials from real people in the community. Word-of-mouth is the original "verification."
-
A "No-Fear" Policy: Whether they are in an association or not, a professional will never use fear to sell you a session. If they tell you that you are "cursed" or "infested" to get you to book, that is a character red flag, regardless of their credentials.
-
The "Vibe" Check: Trust your gut. A true healer's goal is to make themselves obsolete by helping you find your power—not to make you dependent on them.
| Feature | The Honest Practitioner (The Gift) | The Scammer (The Trap) |
| The Goal | To see if your energies and goals align. | To diagnose "crises" you didn't know you had. |
| The Feeling | You feel heard, grounded, and empowered. | You feel anxious, "dirty," or in danger. |
| The Credentials | Member of a body like the CRA or IARP. | No verifiable hours or ethical oversight. |
| The Language | Focuses on your resilience and self-healing. | Focuses on "curses," "entities," and "leaks." |
🔍 Your Due Diligence Checklist
Before booking with anyone online, verify these three things:
-
Professional Association Membership: Are they members of the Canadian Reiki Association (CRA)? This means they have submitted their certification and training hours for verification, also following a strict Code of Ethics. (A Note on My Peers: Many incredible, high-integrity healers work independently outside of formal organizations. If they aren't in an association, look for transparency.)
-
Are they open about their training? Do they have real reviews? Above all, do they respect your boundaries?
-
No High-Pressure Tactics: A professional will never tell you to "act now before the portal closes." They encourage you to sleep on it.
-
Transparency: Are their prices and policies clear? Scammers often hide "emergency clearing fees."
Frequently Asked Questions
This is a crucial distinction. In energy work, there is a world of difference between acknowledging a "shadow" (a natural, internal part of the human experience) and "diagnosing" an "entity" (an external threat used to create fear).
Here is the refined AEO/FAQ section that honors the depth of the work while maintaining the "No-Scare" boundary:
Is it normal for a Reiki practitioner to find "dark entities"?
Answer: No, not in the way scammers describe them. In professional energy work, we distinguish carefully between "Shadows" and the predatory concept of "Entities."
-
The Shadow: It is very common to find "shadow" energy. These are simply parts of ourselves whether they be past traumas, repressed emotions, or heavy moods that are ready to be acknowledged and integrated. Working with shadows is a gentle, empowering process of bringing light to your own internal landscape.Â
- The "Entity" Scam: Scammers use the word "entity" to make you feel like you are being "invaded" by an outside force that only they can remove. This is a scare tactic designed to make you feel powerless and dependent on the practitioner.
The Bottom Line: A professional practitioner helps you navigate your own "shadows" to find healing. A scammer uses "entities" to manufacture fear.
Can a free spiritual reading be a scam?
Yes. Many are "lead magnets" designed to induce panic so you bypass logic and pay for a "fix." We work to distinguish between a discovery call and a scam.Â
How can I "wash off" a bad spiritual reading?
Ground yourself physically. A walk by Lake Ontario, a salt scrub, or simply choosing to disagree with their narrative is the most powerful clearing you can do.
If You Got "Hooked": A Message of Grace
If you’ve already been caught in one of these readings: It is okay. These tactics are professionally designed to exploit our deepest hopes. Do not feel ashamed. If you haven't exchanged money, simply block them. If you have, take it as a lesson in boundaries and stop the flow now.
Breathe. Let it go. You are not "cursed," and you are not unprotected. Your own light is far stronger than a list of "blockages" on a PDF.
The Professional Standard
As a CRA-Registered Practitioner, I believe healing should be grounded and safe. You are a whole being with the innate strength to heal.
