Be Inspired - The Sacral Chakra

"I receive pleasure and abundance with every breath I take."

The sacral chakra wheel

The Chakras have a relationship with our physical body as well as a relationship with our emotional and psychological selves. The Sacral Chakra known as the Sawdisthana has received the nickname “the sex chakra.”

TheSacral Chakras governs our emotions, reproductive processes and systems. It acts as the center for our sensuous pleasure and our sense of adventure. Often it is viewed as the “melting pot” of our relationships.

It is important to remember that this Chakra isn’t only concerned with sex. At it’s broadest definition, the Sacral Chakra governs passion and pleasure which can manifest for us via our creative side as well as our sensual side.

Lake Titacaca

An interesting fact is that our planet Earth’s sacral Chakra is believed to be located at Lake Titicaca. One of the 20th largest lakes in the world, it is divided almost perfectly in half by the Peruvian-Bolivian border. An ancient temple was uncovered there where it was once considered home to the Incas.

The Sacral Chakra is symbolized with the colour red and is located between the perineum and the coccyx bone. This Chakra is considered the foundation to assist us in “enjoying life.”

All the energy centers rely on the Sacral Chakra for our feelings and sensations.  When this second Chakra is blocked or out of balance, it is not uncommon to feel removed from life itself. The expressions “I don’t have it in me.” “I can’t create,” and “I feel void inside,” come from one who experiences a blocked Sacral Chakra.

What does the Sacral Chakra govern?

The Sacral Chakra governs the bladder, kidneys, sex organs and adrenal glands.

On a physical level, a blocked or imbalanced Sacral Chakra may have one experiencing chronic fatigue, urinary tract infections (UTIs), not only a decrease but also an increase in sexual desire and lower back pain. A blocked Sacral Chakra is often associated with menstrual cramps, endometriosis and infertility.

On an emotional level, a blocked or imbalanced Sacral Chakra may have one experience an abundance of sexual tension. One can feel closed off from their lover.

An out of aligned Sacral Chakra can make one feel uncomfortable in their own body, shameful about their sexuality. Often this will erase any spontaneity in the sex life and relationships and cause one to remove themselves from all social situations and intimate moments with partners, family and/or friends.

Emotionally, the Sacral Chakra governs building on or forming new relationships with others and most importantly ourselves. It allows our creative side to flourish providing strong sense of self and accomplishment.

When the Sacral Chakra is operating as it should, you will feel playful, desirable and connected with yourself and your sexual partner. However when an imbalanced is felt, you can experience:

  • Lack of excitement and joy
  • Indecisiveness
  • Feeling unworthy/unloved
  • Feelings of shame or guilt
  • Controlling behaviour
  • Inability to be spontaneous
  • Fear of change
  • Shyness
  • Range of feelings; mood swings
  • Relationship issues
  • Difficulty in expressing sexuality, sensual pleasure
  • Difficulty experiencing sensual and sexual pleasure
  • Inner and outer worlds colliding
  • Loss of creativity
  • Frustration
  • Loss of self
  • Infertility
  • Intimidated
  • Estrangement
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Fantasies
  • Insecurity
  • Difficulty keeping routine
  • Difficulty with day-to-day living
  • Loss of control
  • Feelings of “being out of your skin”

Many of us experience energetic imbalances and blocks. These imbalances and energy blocks prevent us from leading a healthy and productive life. We desire to be free of self-sabotaging habits that leave us feeling exhausted, lonely and even ill.

Healing the Sacral Chakra

There are many ways to open and balance the Sacral Chakra. Getting in touch with the element of water is conducive for inviting feelings of sincere pleasure and adventure.  During times of quarantine we can’t all run off to the islands of Hawaii but we can go for a swim in a local pool if they are open for business. Don’t swim? Enjoy a hot tub – immerse yourself in the bubbling waters.

Take a bath! Add essential oils to the bath water for increased release. Oils such as Goloka’s  (available on our website).

Create! Whether it’s learning how to play the piano or create a great loaf of sourdough bread, immerse yourself in trying something new and let your creative juices flow. Take up knitting and make a scarf for a friend. It doesn’t matter how big or small the creative product is and it doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or a seasoned artiste.

Surround yourself with the colour orange – a bowl of navel oranges on the kitchen counter, diffuse citrus oils in the bedroom to conjure up images of fresh, juicy fruit. Orange is a wonderful accent colour in interior design.

Breath Work*

The Sacral Chakra acts like a furnace to fuel the body’s energy. So, too your breath work can fuel your second Chakra. Abdominal breathing to activate and fill your Sacral Chakra will increase the energy flow to the Chakra. As you inhale, let your abdominal wall extend. Exhale fully while keeping your abdominal wall extended. Breath in and hold for as long as physically comfortable and release fully. Do this breathing as often as possible during your day and gain benefits to provide balance for the Sacral Chakra. It is normal to feel heat in your lower abdomen when you perform this breathing exercise.
