Good intentions vs. real life: What’s swallowing your energy?

WORK IN PROGRESS ...

Have you ever caught yourself late at night, asking: Why can’t I turn off my brain? Why am I carrying everyone else’s stress?

If you are constantly exhausted, feeling drained by the end of the week, or wondering where all your energy went, you aren’t alone. It’s one of the most common reasons clients walk into my Reiki studio. And I the Reiki Master is not immune. We start our week with the best of intentions to stay calm, hold healthy boundaries, and prioritize our own well-being. Yet, by Friday, we are running on empty. Did you just make a sad face? I see you!

Recently, I was revisiting the book How Will You Measure Your Life? by Clayton Christensen. While it’s written by a business professor, one core lesson hit me as a profound truth for holistic healing and energy work:

"Your strategy is not what you say it is. Your strategy is defined by where you actually allocate your resources your time, your energy, and your attention."

In plain terms? Where you spend your energy is your real life strategy.

If you’ve been searching for answers on how to stop feeling overwhelmed and bring your life back into alignment, here is why your energy is leaking. and how to fix it.

1. Why You’re Carrying Everyone Else’s Stress (And How to Stop)

When you live as an empathetic person, a natural caregiver, or a high-responsibility professional, your emotional receiver is permanently turned up. You don’t just observe the moods, stress, and chaos of the people around you, you are actually physically and emotionally registering them. Because your baseline instinct is to help, solve, and ease burdens, you habitually step in to absorb the tension in the room. You absorb the chaos, you are the chaos. Make sense?

Good news is that energy is a finite daily resource. When 90% of your emotional budget goes toward managing everyone else's "temperature" whether that’s putting out constant fires at work, answering late-night messages, or walking on eggshells to keep the peace at home, you leave yourself with a severe energy deficit. You are essentially pouring all your vital life force outward into a leaky bucket, leaving zero reserves for your own nervous system, health, or joy. Over time, this daily imbalance turns into chronic fatigue, brain fog, irritability, and eventual burnout. You get irritable, angry. Did I just see an eye roll?!

How Clearing the Energetic Build-Up Works (The Short-Term Relief)

When clients come into a Reiki session feeling weighed down by other people’s chaos, they are often carrying what isn't theirs to hold. In energy work, this heavy, stagnant feeling is treated as cumulative tension stored in the body's field and nervous system.

During a session, we work to reset that baseline by:

  • Clearing Heavy Energy: Releasing the residual emotional tension you've absorbed from colleagues, family, or demanding environments so your system isn't constantly processing outside noise.

  • Down-Regulating the Nervous System: Shifting your body out of a perpetual "fight-or-flight" stress response and into a "rest-and-digest" parasympathetic state.

  • Restoring Your Core Energy: Replenishing your personal reservoir so you leave feeling lighter, clear-headed, and re-centered in your own skin.

  • Releasing the Stickies: Often I find areas on a client's body where others they have come into contact with have swiped at their energy. Health care workers experience this a lot. You are light and those in the dark are reaching out to you for your light, your peace.  As a Reiki Master I work to release these holds.

This clearing acts as an immediate reset button giving you the breathing room and clarity you need when you're on the verge of exhaustion.

How Shifted Daily Habits Fix It Long-Term (The Permanent Solution)

While an energetic reset gives you back your baseline, long-term relief requires stopping the daily energy leak at the source. If you get cleared on the table but return straight to the same patterns of over-giving and zero boundaries, the heavy build-up simply returns.

To fix this permanently, you have to redirect your daily "energy budget" using practical, intentional habits:

  1. Conduct a Daily "Energy Audit": Before automatically saying "yes" to a request or jumping in to fix a fire, pause and ask yourself: Do I actually have the bandwidth for this right now, or am I spending energy I don't have? Sure at your place of work you may not always have the luxury to say no but step back, you may find you can.

  2. Set Non-Negotiable Energetic Boundaries: Establish clear operational boundaries such as turning off work notifications after a set hour, delaying responses to non-urgent demands, or stepping away from toxic vent sessions. Boundaries aren't walls; they are the fence that protects your energy garden. Think of yourself surrounded by a cute white picket fence. You are enjoying the time on your side of the fence smelling the roses, relaxing with a book. On the other side of the fence is noise, chaos, demands. Would you jump into that? Hell, no. So when the convo gets toxic by the water cooler leave and retreat back to your side of the picket fence!

  3. Practice Active Energy Disconnection: At the end of the workday, create a intentional ritual to "wash off" the day's stress whether that's taking a shower, taking five deep breaths, or practicing a quick grounding exercise to consciously return other people's emotional baggage back to them. A client with a national drug squad unit would literally remove his clothing outside the door before stepping in to his home - it was his disconnection with the day. The action of removing the clothing or what he saw as his armor, allowed him to visualize disconnection and release the nasties to protect his energy and that of his family upon entering home.

  4. Pay Yourself First Energetically: Just like financial savings, schedule your rest, grounding, and personal downtime first on your calendar rather than waiting to see what energy is leftover at the end of the day. And STICK TO IT! Carve out the me time and you'll see your energy rise.

The Bottom Line: A clearing session clears the slate, but setting firm daily boundaries and actively redirecting your time back to yourself is what keeps the slate clean shifting you from constant survival mode into lasting, sustainable peace.

Reiki Self-Care: The Daily System for a Quiet Mind

In How Will You Measure Your Life?, Clayton Christensen famously highlights Dell and Asus; a business case study demonstrating what happens when a company slowly outsources its capabilities piece by piece until it can no longer manufacture its own core product.

As human beings, we do the exact same thing with our well-being. We slowly outsource our peace to external fixes whether it be a glass of wine, scrolling social media until our eyes burn, or relying solely on a monthly spa trip, hoping it will turn off our racing brain at night. But when you outsource your ability to regulate your own nervous system, you lose the internal muscle needed to find quiet on your own.

Let it go with Reiki has a sweet self-care course that gives you the tools for a daily system. Affordable with helpful tips to quiet the mind and support you to measure up your life. On sale today here

Reiki self-care is how you bring that capability back in-house.

Just as Christensen advises companies to build and retain their core capabilities, practicing daily or evening Reiki self-care trains your body to self-regulate before your head hits the pillow. You don't have to wait for a full professional treatment to get the benefits; you can build a 10-minute self-care ritual right into your bedtime routine:

  • The Hands-on-Heart Reset: As you lie in bed, place one hand over your heart center and one hand on your solar plexus (upper stomach). Allow the natural warm energy of your own palms to ground your attention into your physical body rather than the thoughts spinning in your head.

  • The "Energy Off-Loading" Breath: As you hold these positions, visualize all the short-term feedback loops from your workday—the emails, the problem-solving, the mental to-do lists—draining out through your hands and feet into the earth. Consciously declare: "My work for today is done."

Rule" for Energetic Boundaries

Christensen makes a brilliant point about integrity that applies directly to personal boundaries: It is much easier to stick to your boundaries 100% of the time than 98% of the time.

When you say "Just this once, I'll answer emails past 8 PM" or "Just this once, I'll say yes when I really mean no," you open the door to constant energy leaks. That 2% compromise slowly erodes your peace.

Protecting your energy isn't selfish—it’s how you stay whole enough to show up genuinely for the people and things you love.

Realigning Your Intentions with Your Energy

At the end of the day, success isn't measured by how many tasks you crossed off your list or how much stress you absorbed for others. It’s measured by the depth of your peace, your health, and the quality of connection you hold with yourself and your loved ones.

If your intentions are to feel grounded and centered, but your daily calendar reflects chaos, take a gentle breath. Don't judge yourself. Simply pause and ask:

  • Where did my energy actually go today?

  • What is one boundary I can set to bring my energy back home to me? Or, what should I say no to today?

You've got this! Cx
