What a Deaf Teammate and K-Pop’s Big Ocean Taught Me About Energy Flow

Beyond Words: Big Ocean, The Throat Chakra, and the Power of Expression

In the mid-nineties, I worked with a woman named Margaret who changed the way I "hear" the world. Margaret was deaf from birth, and as someone who has always been a "live wire" with plenty to say, I quickly realized that my typing wasn't enough to capture the energy of our friendship. I began learning Sign Language, eventually bringing the whole team on board to bridge the gap between our worlds.

I learned something from Margaret that I carry into my Reiki practice every day: When one sense is quieted, the others don't just compensate—they soar.

The Global Frequency of Inclusion

When BTS released "Permission to Dance" using sign language a few years back, my heart chakra soared. And now, seeing the news that Big Ocean—the world’s first deaf K-pop group—is dropping their new EP on March 3, 2026, I feel that same thrill.

These aren't just "performances." They are massive, global activations of the Throat Chakra.

In Reiki, the Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) is the center of communication and integrity. We often think of it as the "speaking" chakra, but Margaret taught me that you don't need sound to have a voice. Whether it’s through the fluid grace of ASL, the vibrations of a bass line felt through the floor, or the "good play" signs shared between teammates on a Burlington hockey rink, expression is an energetic frequency.

The Hockey Rink and the Heart

I’m reminded of my youngest son’s hockey days. One of his teammates was hearing impaired and wore a specially equipped helmet to stay safe on the ice. But the real magic happened after the whistle. Seeing those young players drop their gloves to sign "good game" to their teammate did my heart more good than any trophy ever could.

That is alignment in action. It’s the moment where the Heart Chakra (compassion) meets the Throat Chakra (expression) to create a sense of belonging.

Opening Your Own Throat Chakra

If you’ve been feeling "stuck" or unheard lately, it might not be because you aren't speaking loud enough. It might be because your energy isn't flowing to your preferred method of expression.

How to rejoice in your own "voice" this month:

  • Listen with your skin: Take a moment to feel the vibration of music rather than just listening to the lyrics.
  • Speak with your hands: Practice intentional gestures or "open" body language to show you are present.
  • Clear the static: If you feel a "lump in your throat" or find it hard to say what you mean, a Reiki session can help clear the physical and emotional tension sitting in that space.

As we celebrate the milestone of Big Ocean this March, let’s remember that the world is a much richer place when we use all our senses to connect. Whether you are signing, singing, or simply sitting in a quiet, powerful presence, your voice matters.
