When "Spirit Guides" Silence Your Sovereign Voice

There is a beautiful, sacred moment in energy healing when the veil thins, the noise of the world drops away, and we feel the gentle, loving presence of the unseen world. Whether you call them ancestors, angels, or spirit guides, connecting with this higher wisdom can be a profound source of comfort.

But lately, in my practice, I’ve noticed a subtle and concerning shift.

I recently met a seeker who had moved to a new location and came to me looking for answers. She didn’t want a hands-on Reiki session; she wanted clarity. In her previous spiritual work, she had become so heavily involved with her "spirit guides" that she had completely stopped making her own decisions. From major life choices to tiny daily actions, she depended on them entirely.

She had inadvertently handed over the driver’s seat of her life.

When the ethereal world becomes so loud that it drowns out your human agency, it is no longer a spiritual connection. It is spiritual dependency.

The Practitioner’s Trap: Forgetting Whose Story It Is

As practitioners, we carry a massive responsibility to hold a clean, grounded space. But we are human, and it is easy to fall into a subtle trap: we get so enamored by the messages coming through that we forget the person sitting across from us.

When a practitioner becomes a mere megaphone for "guides" without anchoring those insights into the client's lived reality, we do them a disservice. We feed the cycle of dependency.

As healers, our job isn't to look at a client and say, "Your guides told me you must do X, Y, and Z." Our job is to help the client feel safe enough, grounded enough, and clear enough in their own body to say, "I know exactly what I need to do next." Every session must belong entirely to the client’s story and not the practitioner’s ego, and not a spiritual committee.

The Danger of Spiritual Bypass and the Fragile Ego

Why do we do this? Why do we surrender our autonomy to the unseen?

Often, it comes down to a fear of making mistakes. Human life is messy, unpredictable, and vulnerable. If we let our "guides" make every decision, we think we are safe from failure. If a choice goes wrong, we can blame the universe instead of taking responsibility.

This is a form of spiritual bypass. It uses the higher realms to escape the heavy, beautiful, and sometimes uncomfortable work of being a human being. When we stop flexing our free-will muscles, our inner sovereignty atrophies.

A Message of Caution: Questioning the Unseen

If you find yourself relying heavily on external spiritual directives, it is time to practice some healthy, compassionate skepticism.

  • Not everything that speaks is meant to be followed: Just because an insight comes from a meditative state or a spiritual session doesn't make it an absolute command. True, high-vibrational guidance never demands obedience; it offers perspective.

  • Listen to your own body first: Your root chakra, your gut intuition, and your physical heart are your primary compasses. If a "message" makes you feel anxious, powerless, or dependent, turn down the volume.

  • Practice Spiritual Boundaries: It is entirely healthy to tell the spiritual realm, "Thank you for the insight, but I’ve got this choice covered on my own today."

If you have recently gone through a major life transition like a move, a career change, or a loss your foundation is naturally shaken. It makes sense that you might want to reach upward for anchors. But the medicine for an ungrounded life isn't more sky; it’s more earth.

True spiritual maturity isn't about escaping into the ethereal. It is about bringing that higher wisdom down into your bones, standing firmly on your own two feet, and remembering that you are the sovereign author of your own story. The guides are just the audience cheering you on from the sidelines. You are the one on the stage. #maincharacterenergy

A Single Question to Guide Your Next Choice:

The next time you feel a decision looming, close your eyes, place a hand on your heart, and ask yourself: “If I couldn’t ask the universe for a sign, what would my own quiet voice choose right now?”

I caption the photo accompanying this blog, "Heavens Boundaries." I hope it resonates and provides comfort to you on your wellness journey. If I can help in any way with a long distance session or in-person in Burlington, Ontario please reach out. As a former journalist I spent hours writing human interest stories but now as a Reiki Practitioner and Teacher I welcome the opportunity to help you hear your voice and write your own story. Peace.
