5 Fun Outdoor Activities for Grandparents and Grandkids in Burlington, Ontario
There are plenty of wonderful outdoor activities in Burlington, Ontario that grandparents can enjoy with their grandchildren. Here are five great options that the littles and I recommend:
-
Spencer Smith Park: This beautiful park along Lake Ontario in downtown Burlington offers scenic walking paths, a playground, and plenty of open space for picnics. The park features a scenic pier where kids can enjoy the views of Lake Ontario and watch the boats go by. The playground is a hit with children, offering a variety of equipment including swings, climbers, and my grandson's favourite - the zip-line! The Royal Canadian Naval Ships Memorial Monument is a special place for us as it highlights two of the ships my dear Uncle Gordon sailed on. Take the kids to the monument and teach them about our sailors who served during WWII.
-
Royal Botanical Gardens: Explore the extensive gardens, trails, and nature sanctuaries. This is a fantastic place for the grands to learn about plants and wildlife while enjoying the fresh air. Don't miss The Great Pumpkin Trail, October 18 - 20 and 25-27. This event is a grand fav. They love walking through the hundreds of lit jack-o-lanterns. Makes for a magical time! We often wonder if one pumpkins will turn into a carriage for our Cinderella evening!
-
Bronte Creek Provincial Park: Just at the Burlington/Oakville border on the north side of the QEW, this park offers hiking trails and a sweet children's farm with pigs and bunnies! Need I say any more? Pigs and bunnies!!!!
-
Mount Nemo Conservation Area: For a bit of adventure, head to Mount Nemo. The trails here offer stunning views and are suitable for ages 4+. I'll never forget the Beaver hike my son took years ago - if it hadn't been for his light up shoes the leaders wouldn't have found their way back to the entrance!!! Imagine Scouters organizing a hike on a new moon!
-
Apple Picking at Local Orchards: Mark of the "Live with Kelly and Mark" morning talk show announced he hates apple picking but Kelly and I love it. And, we've got lots of apple orchards in the area to choose from. Kids learn about farming and enjoy the fruits of their labour apple picking! We recently enjoyed Hutchinson Farm located at 6202 Walkers Line. The hayride is a big hit as are the farm animals.
