Six Top Tips to Simplify Christmas

As the Christmas season approaches, many of us feel the pressure to create the perfect holiday experience. This can often lead to stress and exhaustion, overshadowing the joy of the season. Over the years, I've learned to simplify Christmas while still making it memorable for my family. Here’s how you can do it too!

1. Focus on What Matters Most Take the time to identify what’s truly important to you this Christmas. Whether it’s celebrating your faith, spending time with family, or serving others, let this focus guide your decisions. Consider creating a Festive Positivity Calendar to challenge yourself and others to share gratitude throughout the season. (email for calendar here

2. Simplify Your Traditions. Set Boundaries.

 Ask yourself these key questions:

  • What stresses me out about Christmas?

  • What can I say no to this year?

  • Will this create meaningful memories?

Focus on traditions that bring joy and let go of those that cause stress. For example, if hosting a cookie exchange feels overwhelming, gather for a simpler event like a January drinks get-together instead.

3. Plan Ahead Planning early can help you stay organized and reduce stress. Make lists for gifts, stocking stuffers, traditions, and food. Streamline your holiday activities by focusing on what’s truly essential. Consider decluttering and organizing your home ahead of time to create a peaceful holiday environment.

4. Decorate Less You don’t need to deck out your entire house to create a festive atmosphere. Choose a few favorite decorations and displays, and donate the rest. Simple touches can make your home feel special without the added stress of extensive decorating and cleanup.

5. Shop and Travel Less Consider cutting back on the number of gifts and travel plans. Focus on thoughtful, meaningful presents rather than quantity. Simplify your schedule by attending fewer parties and events, prioritizing gatherings with your closest family and friends.

6. Schedule Self-Care Make sure to carve out time for self-care during the holiday season. Whether it’s taking a relaxing bath, enjoying a quiet evening with a good book, or scheduling a rejuvenating Reiki session, prioritize activities that help you de-stress and reconnect with your inner peace. Streamline Gift-Giving Consider the 4-gift rule: "Something they want, something they need; something they wear, something they read." Adding a fifth gift—experiences—can create lasting memories. Think about zoo, museum, or planetarium memberships, which are great for kids of all ages!

At the end of the season, you’ll look back and feel good about how you spent your time and resources. You’ll know it was a Christmas that truly mattered, filled with quality time with loved ones and moments of self-care.
