Teen Mental Wellness: Reiki for Stress, Focus, and Calm

Teen mental wellness is more urgent than ever. In the latest Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey, CAMH (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health) research shows over fifty percent of students in grades 7 to 12 reported they’d intentionally harmed themselves. Recent coverage of youth mental health by GlobalTV reported that an alarming 18% of youth interviewed admitted they had serious thoughts of suicide. 

Dr. Hayley Hamilton, co-director of the Institute for Mental Health Policy Research at CAMH, puts it plainly: “These results paint a concerning picture of youth mental health in Ontario … … a generation under increasing stress and the need for continued and increased investments in youth mental health.”

We need to take a moment to pause, reset, and support the mental health of young people in our lives. At Let It Go With Reiki, I’ve spent the past year working with amazing teens from student athletes preparing for big games to students juggling school, friendships, and life’s pressures.

These sessions have given me a window into the real-life pressures teens face and the courage they show every day. Teens have shared the ups and downs of their mental health, from performance anxiety to personal challenges that often go unnoticed. Reiki for teens isn’t just a relaxing moment. I was driven to write Reiki for Kids after a chance encounter with a mom who had just returned from a teacher interview about her daughter, a grade six student facing severe online bullying. Six girls had targeted her, each running multiple accounts where they hurled cruel insults, echoing the dark tone of the recent Netflix drama Unlocked. The mother’s tears broke my heart. Having experienced bullying of my own children on that very schoolyard twenty years earlier, I was horrified to hear the advice hadn’t changed: “It’s not you, it’s them. Let’s rise above it.” That night, I worked late into the evening to create Reiki for Kids, an on-line guide, course, offering tools and reassurance that children are never alone, that their feelings are valid and meant to be shared, and that support exists not only for them but for parents, too. Because bullying isn’t something we simply “rise above” but something that requires compassionate attention, mental health resources, and an abundance of tools to lean on, Reiki included.
